Seniors Outreach Services Society Our Outreach Services

» Referral Program: allows Seniors Outreach to receive referrals from seniors, community professionals, family, neighbours and caregivers, and to refer callers to our own programs and other services in the community.

» Visitor Program: matches clients and volunteers, under the direction of the coordinator. Volunteer visits may be requested directly by the client, her/his family/friends, or by a healthcare professional, and are usually arranged on a weekly basis. Assessment as to suitability is determined by coordinator.

» Telephone Assurance Program: for seniors who prefer a telephone call only, as a way of visiting.  Allows housebound individuals the opportunity to volunteer.

» Seniors 'Coffee Breaks': provides a social opportunity for seniors to meet other seniors in their own neighbourhoods, and make connections. Volunteer hosts welcome participants. Drop-in at any group; no fee or registration required. Capri:           Mall Food Court: Thursdays, 1-2:30. Mission:     The Haven Restaurant: Mondays, 10-11:30 (to the left of the front desk) Rutland:  Fernbrae Manor: Thursdays, 1:30-3:30 (2nd floor Activity Room) Glenmore:  St. David's, 271 Glenmore Rd: Tuesdays 10-11:30 (main hall).

» Housing Outreach Social Worker: provides support and assistance to seniors to help them maintain wellness and independence. Help available with landlord/tenant issues, exploring housing options, choosing appropriate housing, completing forms, applying for benefits, coordinating services and understanding options.

» Community Volunteer Income Tax Program: provides trained volunteers to prepare income tax forms for those with low income.

» Eldernet: Computer mentoring/training may be provided to individuals who cannot attend lessons/courses in the community.

» PALS (Partners Assisting Local Seniors) Program: information available to staff/management of local businesses to assist them to recognize signs of risk in the elderly, and provides a telephone number to call for help.

Our Information Services

» Information Program: An up-to-date database of health, housing, benefit and community information is maintained, and information is available over the phone, by mail, email, in our print ElderGuide and on our ElderGuide website (see below) or in person. Information also available to assist in making choices around housing and care planning, links to needed health information and resources as well as community social and recreational programming.

» Elderguide: a Directory of Services for Seniors: the database we maintain is made available to the community in a variety of formats: through the Referral and Information Programs, in a regularly updated and published Directory of Services for Seniors, distributed to volunteers, health care providers and other community organizations, and through a special website (http://www.elderguide.ca)

» Resource Library: books, videos, government publications and other publications are available to borrow.

Our Volunteer Programs

» The Volunteer Visitor Program: matches clients and volunteers, under the direction of the coordinator.

» Telephone Assurance Program: allows housebound individuals the opportunity to volunteer.

» Community Volunteer Income Tax Program: Canada Customs and Revenue Agency trained volunteers assist limited income individuals prepare their income tax forms.

» Handyman: Minor home repairs/tasks may be completed by capable volunteers. Contact Coordinator for availability.

» Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteer are always welcome in all service areas, as well as fundraising, promotional events and on the Board of Directors. Volunteer Visitors, Handypersons, Computer mentors and Coffee Break Hosts are where most volunteers participate. Contact Coordinator of Volunteers for more information or to apply.
