A Profile of Seniors in BC
» BC has one of the most rapidly aging populations in Canada.
» Between 1991-2001 there was a 54% increase, the highest level of growth amongst all provinces.
» Seniors (age 65 and over) make up 13.3 % of the population in BC
» 56% of seniors are women and 44% are men
» About 3-quarters of the senior population is 65 to 79 years old, and 1-quarter is over 80.
» It is estimated that in 2031 seniors will make up 24% of the population in BC. This will be double the number of seniors today.
» In 2001, the Vancouver Island and Interior Health Authorities reported having the highest proportion of seniors in their populations at 16% each.
» At least 1 in 12 seniors suffer from Alzheimer's disease or related dementia and seniors account for approximately 12% of all suicides in Canada and falls and fractures is the sixth leading causes of seniors death in Canada.
